Student anchor papers are included with each science task at the four levels of the Exemplars Standards-Based Science Rubric: Novice, Apprentice, Practitioner (meets the standard), and Expert. These student work samples are annotated and identify important distinctions for teachers to look for when assessing students.

Teachers may use these visual examples with students to provide a concrete understanding of what work meets (and doesn't meet) the standard. These resources may also be used as a basis for student self- and peer-assessment.

Additionally, they may be used in staff development.
