I love how the Exemplars lend themselves to using real strategies/tools (use of ten frame, Rekenrek, diagrams) that support the understanding that math is a language. It gives kids an authentic way to use the math strategies and tools. It demonstrates for them and their parents that "new math" is not saying that there is anything wrong with an algorithm (it is one good strategy), but kids need to have several strategies to really demonstrate and have mathematical fluency. I love using Exemplars in kindergarten and they have scaffolded my own thinking...
