Learning to Write, Writing to Learn"School days, school days, dear old golden rule days ... Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, taught to the tune of a hickory stick" goes the old song. While we are all thankful that the hickory stick has been retired, in too many classrooms, writing has all but disappeared as well. With the demands of the No Child Left Behind law, more emphasis is being placed on reading and math while writing is often put on the back burner... Welcome to Developing WritersWriting is fundamental. It is not only the vehicle by which we communicate our thinking with others, but as Karen Kurzman points out in her article, it is also a way we process information. As we organize our thoughts to write, we learn content. Exemplars has always felt that communicating our thinking is critical, and should be considered a basic skill. Supporting Math Reform in the NYC Middle SchoolsExemplars is pleased to be working in collaboration with 200 New York City middle schools, to provide assessment and instruction material as well as professional development. |
